Although it takes years to make a (blockchain) game that could be successful, this week has seen the confluence of four possible winners.
Most immediate has been the release of Mythical Games’ FIFA Rivals.
I’ve only just started playing but have been surprised about how different it is compared to Mythical’s debut NFL Rivals — much more than just the change from landscape to portrait mode.
In terms of gameplay, the main mode now is PVP, and in terms of digital assets the overall mode is much more pay-to-win, albeit with these assets being consumables. Even players can only be used for a certain number of matches before they have to be reupped.
How that impacts the game’s overall feel and monetization in the long term, we’ll have to see. But FIFA Rivals already feels like a much more ambitious game than NFL Rivals.

Also launching this week was Voya Games’ Project Voyager, which is the play-to-airdrop meta app for idle resource game Craft World that’s going live on Ronin on 5th July.
I wrote a lot about it yesterday and no doubt will be writing about it a bunch more in the coming days.
Suffice to say, it’s free-to-play and you should try it, maybe even using my referral.
Another game I’ve started playing this week — albeit with much less agency and understanding — is CCP Games’ EVE Frontier. As it’s now lifted players’ NDA, I’ll be sharing more whenever I feel I can actually explain something. The good news is this game will be in development for years so I’ve got plenty of time to learn.
The last of the four games is Nexon’s MapleStory N, which is two-days-short of its first month live. The numbers to-date remain promising:
a peak of 84,688 DAUWs on 9th June,
1 million active wallets on its NFT marketplace,
21 million NFTs sold,
total trading NFT volume over $14 million.

A very good and detailed analysis of MapleStory N’s progress to-date, which is highly positive on its trajectory. I do not think, however that “MSU is web3 gaming's only hope”.
