As befitting the start of a new month, it’s been a week of numbers and graphs.
First up, I looked at the investment stats for November, which saw the third highest amount of announced funding into the sector during 2024 thus far.
Of course, this is purely down to Azra Games’ $42.7 million Series A round, which itself was the single largest blockchain game investment of 2024 thus far.
In other words, October feels like it will be an outlier in a year that — unless the Trump crypto boost really gathers steam — is almost certain to come in around 25% down on the total amount of funding announced in 2023,
The main topic for the week, however, was Gunzilla Games’ Off The Grid, which launched four weeks ago.
As well as drilling down into its activity and rough retention numbers on Tuesday, I discussed the launch and the ongoing rollout plan with Gunzilla’s director of web3 Theodore Arganat in Blockchain Gaming World episode 185.
Coincidentally, Off The Grid’s daily user base holding at a steady 500,000 DAUWs coincided with a decline in Pixels’ daily audience from around 500,000 to 250,000, making the first blockchain-enabled console game also the most popular blockchain game in terms of daily activity.
However, it’s worth pointing out that one-year-on from its relaunch on Ronin, Pixels is now focused on rewarding its committed players and generating revenue from them, not driving audience.
And given Gunzilla has raised over $100 million to develop Off The Grid and its Gunz blockchain, a similar switch of emphasis from headline user numbers to optimizing the game’s monetization is likely to happen sooner rather than later.
