Releasing news on a Friday isn’t a good move but sometimes you just have to roll with the punches.
Specifically in the case that Mighty Bear Games’ GOAT Gaming has announced it’s launching on Base-based L3 B3, it reinforced my plan to kick off next week writing about how Coinbase’s Optimism-based L2 blockchain is increasingly becoming a go-to-chain for gaming.
As for examples, it’s already seen the successful deployment of Blocklords Dynasty — heavily botted of course — as well as Atari’s retro NFT games and the forthcoming launch of Planet Mojo’s MOJO token, which joins existing tokens such as Animoca’s TOWER. Less successfully to-date, Skrice Studios’ Heroes of Mavia also uses Base for its RUBY token and cosmetics marketplace.
What’s interesting about Mighty Bear’s decision is that it originally launched its Mighty Action Heroes battle royale game on Polygon, before switching to TreasureDAO a year or so ago. For the record, Treasure is launching its own Treasurechain but that uses the rival L2 Arbitrum.
As for B3, it’s a new entrant. Founded by Coinbase/Base executives, it recently announced a sizeable $18 million series A funding round, which was led by Pantera with participation from respected crypto VCs such as Makers Fund, Hashed, Sfermion and Collab + Currency. This takes its total funding to $21 million.
Notably it doesn’t look like Coinbase itself has invested. Make of that what you will.
Mighty Bear says it’s chosen B3 because of its focus on “bringing web3 to the masses”, something it’s also seeking to do with the launch of GOAT Gaming on Telegram.
“With B3 removing much of the hassle around crosschain account management and abstraction, we believe in B3's ability to make the onchain experience much more seamless, thereby paving the way to onboard millions of players into web3,” it says.
