Happy 4th Bitcoin halving; something that’s currently expected to occur in the early hours of Saturday 20th April.
The change from 6.25 BTC rewarded per block solved to 3.125 isn’t directly relevant to blockchain gaming, but it is nevertheless an interesting reminder of the weird things that happen when “code is law”.
Of course, the really weird things are the stories we tell ourselves and the subsequent actions we take around those happenings. Number go down? No. Number go up!
As for blockchain gaming this week….
On Monday, we started off with a general overview of what was happening with mobile strategy game Heroes of Mavia, which turned into a ‘whosoldit’ as I ended up investigating if guilds had been selling their land NFTs and airdropped tokens. And indeed, one had!
Tuesday was a dive into game token performance, which has changed significantly from the start of April to the current situation. Only seven of the top gaming tokens are up on the year, compared to 16 at the end of Q1 2024. Indeed, #1 gaming token IMX has dropped from #25 to #42 in terms of overall crypto rankings.
Still, RON has finally flipped AXS.
Wednesday saw the release of Blockchain Gaming World #165: an interview with Sebastian Borget and Nicola Sebastiani from The Sandbox, covering how they plan to solve platform’s cold start problem and something of the roadmap during 2024 and into 2025: going from alpha to beta, and then v1 and a mobile release.
On Thursday, we discussed Yuga Labs’ further disengagement from gaming as it focuses on its Otherside metaverse. One result has been the sale of its HV-MTL and Legends of the Mara games to development partner Faraway, which will now attempt to reinvigorate them, in part by adding interoperability.
That could be a tough ask, especially in the case of current HV-MTL game, which is dull. The HV-MTL NFTs themselves could be a different story, though.
